With the potential mass adoption of Web3 being widely discussed, more companies and corporations are taking the leap to embrace this new technology. For instance, Web2 professionals like XPLA’s’ Paul Kim are looking to change the Web3 space as we know it, starting with GameFi.
In the fourth edition of Salad Spotlight, we interviewed him to discuss the future of this space and how to onboard Web2 audiences.
Making The Switch
While more brands are testing out different strategies to adopt Web3 as a part of their business model, it’s typically the smaller brands that are doing so. Some larger corporations are still holding out to see the reactions of their target market.
Paul says that this isn’t necessarily a bad thing as not every consumer is ready to embrace Web3 technology and it’s better to deploy a strategy that resonates with the target audience instead of blindly rushing into the hype.
An alternative for Web2 companies that are still on the fence is to add a Web3 extension on top of their existing product for consumers who are Web3-ready.
“One thing that Web2 companies can do is add some Web3 features to their product. This allows users who are ready to use Web3 technology to have that option while keeping the product primed for Web2 users. This also sends a message that the company is open to change and looking ahead for the benefit of their users.”
Play-to-Earn Mobile & GameFi’s Future
Com2uS, XPLA’s parent company, is a mobile gaming development studio that produces iOS and Android games with over 90 million downloads. XPLA was set up to enter the new era of Web3 mobile games with the aim of being the first to publish their games on Web3 platforms.
“I think Com2uS and by extension, XPLA, has always had that foresight in Web3 where we’ve managed to get in early on GameFi at the same time Axie Infinity started to take off. This led to the start of XPLA where we try to provide solutions to gamers who are Web3-ready.”
The introduction of XPLA prior to the GameFi boom placed them in the prime position to pioneer the future of Play-to-Earn mobile games. XPLA doesn’t intend to stop at producing play-to-earn games, but intends to be the epicentre of Play-to-Earn mobile games by offering an end-to-end solution for blockchain games including tokenomics, NFT marketplaces and wallets.
Accountability Before Adoption
In the previous Salad Spotlight, we also discussed mass Web3 adoption and how more Web2 professionals are looking to take the leap.
Our guest, Joanna from Galxe, asked Paul for some strategies we can use to ease the transition for Web2 professionals and a prediction for the rise of Web4.
“I think now, more than ever, we need to find ways to hold Web3 projects accountable to their audiences. To successfully move to Web3, we need to gain the trust of those who are in Web2 and we can’t do that without accountability. Once that trust is earned, more people will be open to the idea of moving ahead with Web3.”
With regards to Web4, he doesn’t think that we’re ready for it just yet. He states that we are still early in Web3 and have to focus on finding solutions that suit the needs of both Web2 and Web3 users before we can consider moving onto Web4.
On the topic of Web3 adoption, Paul’s question for the next Salad Spotlight guest is: How do we keep Web3 projects accountable for their actions and ensure that they deliver their promises to their customers?
